La Recoleta Cemetery

La Recoleta Images

Located in the Recoleta district of Buenos Aires the cemetery comprises around 4700 graves of notable denizens of Argentina including Eva Peron. Interestingly it also contains the grave of one of Napoleon’s granddaughters.

Monks of the Order of the Recoletos arrived here in the 18th century with the cemetery built around the Our Lady of the Pilar Church and remodelled in 1881.

In 2011, the BBC named it as one of the world’s best cemeteries, while CNN listed it among the 10 most beautiful cemeteries in the world.

Walking through the cemetery you get a real sense of moving through time with a variety of architectural styles including Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Baroque and Neo-Gothic. I was fascinated by the shadows cast in the early evening, the contrast and textures giving a sense of connection between the grand and elaborate graves. If you ever get an opportunity to visit Buenos Aires, I would fully recommend a visit to the cemetery, at the time of writing it is still open to the public.
